There are three people in your relationship.
There is you. There is him. And then there is the Ghost.
Forgive me for using a female standpoint. This post is for both gender.
She isn’t actually there, of course. She hasn’t called him in years. She has probably moved on, got married, or moved to a different country.
But in your head, she is sitting right between you at the dinner table. You are measuring yourself against a memory, convinced that you are competing for a trophy that you have already won.
You feel crazy. You know logically that she is in the past. You know he chose you. But late at night, the intrusive thoughts win.
You wonder if she was funnier. You wonder if he loved her more. You wonder if you are just the consolation prize he settled for.
Permit me to call this self-torture and not just jealousy.
And the hardest pill to swallow is this: The Ghost isn’t haunting your relationship. You are.
You are the one summoning her. You are the one inviting her into your bed. You are the one keeping her memory alive long after he has let it die.
Here are the signs that you are letting his past destroy your present.
1. You Are A Digital Archaeologist
You aren’t just looking at her profile. You are scrolling back to 2021. You are reading the comments on old photos to see what his friends said about her. You are checking who liked what.
You are looking for evidence of how much he loved her. You are studying her face, her clothes, and her captions, trying to decode what made her special.
This isn’t curiosity. It is called pain-shopping.
Every minute you spend scrolling through her life is a minute you are absent from your own. You are looking for proof that you aren’t enough, and because the internet is a highlight reel, you will always find it.
2. You Invent “Secret Meanings”
He puts on a song in the car. You immediately tense up. Is this their song? Does he think of her when he hears this?
He takes you to a restaurant. You wonder, Did he bring her here? Is he remembering their dates?
You assign sentimental value to things that might just be random. You turn his Spotify playlist into a minefield. You are projecting a romantic narrative onto his life that probably doesn’t exist.
To him, it’s just a song. To you, it’s a love letter to someone else.
3. You Treat His Memories As Betrayals
He mentions a holiday he took five years ago. He says, “Oh yeah, that was a great trip.”
You feel a stab of anger. How dare he have a great trip without you? How dare he have a happy memory that doesn’t include you?
You view his past happiness as a personal insult. You want him to look back on his life before you as a desolate wasteland. When he admits he was happy before you met, you feel betrayed.
But this is unfair. His past happiness is what made him the man you love today. If he had been miserable, he wouldn’t be the person he is.
4. You Are Competing With A Ghost
You find out she cooked great Italian food, so you become obsessed with learning to make pasta. You find out she liked hiking, so you suddenly buy walking boots.
You are trying to “out-do” her. You are trying to overwrite his memories by being a “better” version of her.
But you cannot compete with a ghost. A ghost has no flaws. A ghost never has morning breath, never gets moody, and never burns the toast. In your head, she is perfect.
In reality, she was just a person with flaws that caused them to break up. You are fighting a battle against a fantasy.
5. You Ask Questions You Don’t Want The Answer To
“Did you love her more than me?”
“Was the sex better?”
“Do you miss her?”
You ask these questions hoping for reassurance, but no answer he gives will satisfy you.
- If he says “No,” you think he is lying to protect your feelings.
- If he says “Yes” (or hesitates), you are devastated.
You are setting traps that snap shut on your own fingers. You are forcing him to relive the past just so you can analyse his tone of voice.
6. You Feel Like The “Consolation Prize”
This is the core fear. You believe that if they hadn’t broken up, he would still be with her. Therefore, you are only here by default. You are the “Plan B.”
You convince yourself that he is “settling” for you because he couldn’t have her. This narrative strips you of your power. It makes you feel like a placeholder in your own life.
But the truth is simpler: They broke up for a reason. If she was “The One,” she would still be there. She isn’t. You are.
7. You Are Waiting For Him To Leave
Because you feel like an imposter, you are constantly waiting to be found out. You are waiting for him to realise that you aren’t as good as her and leave.
This anxiety makes you clingy, defensive, or cold. You sabotage the relationship to align with your fear.
Ironically, your obsession with his ex might drive him away—not because he misses her, but because he can’t handle the third person you keep bringing into the room.
Now, The Mirror Moment
Stop looking back. He isn’t.
He is looking at you. He wakes up next to you. He calls you when he has good news. He is building a future with you.
Every time you bring her up, you are telling him, “I don’t trust that I am enough for you.”
You are enough. The past is a lesson, not a threat. The ghost only has power if you give it a seat at the table.
Kick her out. Eat your dinner in peace.
